WASHINGTON – Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Tuesday will take the first real steps toward lifting the ban on gays serving openly in the military, announcing a yearlong review aimed at answering practical and emotional questions about the effect of lifting the ban, and imposing looser standards for enforcing the ban in the meantime.

According to U.S. officials, the senior-level study will be co-chaired by a top-ranked civilian and a senior uniformed officer. It would recommend the best way to go about lifting the ban, starting from the premise that it will take time to accomplish that goal but that it can be done without harming the capabilities or cohesion of the military force, officials said.

The title of the article amuses me: "Officials to study lifting ban on gays." Like it takes a year of mulling-over to come to the conclusion that gays are not in fact corrupting the military. Herp derp.

At any rate, this is good news!

Well, I dunno. They have a point. As a gay man, I WANT TO SLEEP WITH EVERY MAN I SEE WALK DOWN THE STREET. Particularly those in uniform. And, of course, I will rape them. I will rape them all.
Ooh! Don't you feel edgy? Bite your lips and bleed.

Well the study is about how to repeal the ban, no whether, so that's good. McCain may not like dick, but he certainly likes being one. I love, though, how whenever a politician argues against repealing the ban, he/she says that it would make the troops uncomfortable and destroy company unity, yet when troops are actually asked about gays serving openly in the military almost all are in favor of it.
Did you know that dolphins are just gay sharks?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Gays aren't people, they're rape machines.

Not to mention, if the troops were uncomfortable with people of a certain group then wouldn't that be a problem with the troops themselves? I feel like if someone were to enlist in the military and then say, "Hey, I'm really uncomfortable around blacks," they would kick the person out/council the shit out of them, not remove all black people from the situation. It's weird that they'd use "they might be uncomfortable" as a defense, because I think most healthy, adjusted, non-prejudice people are not in fact uncomfortable in the mere presence of whatever oppressed/minority group.
