Gay Parenting from the child's POV

Postby TheYoungerMcDaid » Wed Oct 07, 2009 2:21 pm

I wanted to give my views on gay parenting from the child's POV as for the past 4 years I have been raised by my brother and his husband.
A quick summary of our family, I'm Rachel, age 16 from Blackpool in North-West England. Just over 4 and a half years ago, both of my parents passed away which left me and my brother Kevin (who's now 25) and his boyfriend Markus. Since then we have all lived together and, early this year, Kevin and Markus got married. We are very happy as a family, my brother and Markus are both my legal guardians and they have recently started the adoption process aswell, for a young boy in our area.
While technically I'm not the child of gay parents, having lived in both a straight and gay family situation, I can say that a gay family has a completely different dinamic, in many good ways and sometimes not so good, (think girly moments). The good definitely outweighs the bad!
We have encountered some issues with people who don't like the way my brother and his husband live their lives and don't like the fact that they wish to bring another child into the equation but we rise above this as we know that we try to live our lives the best way we can.
I have experienced some problems with people in my school purely for the fact that I live with 2 gay men, while this is hard to hear, I know that we have a strong, stable home and these people discriminate because they don't understand our family.
I can't wait for our family to expand as I know that my brother and his husband have, and will be, great parents to any child who joins our home. :)

Thanks for sharing your experience, Rachel. :) It's not often the community gets to hear about gay parenting from the kids' perspective. Very cool.
